Let’s get real: most of us spend 6 to 8 hours in our beds. So the kind of sheets you choose to sleep with is a personal choice -- and it’s an important one. At Tess., our collections of bedsheets are split into different materials: percale cotton, linen, muslin cotton, Coco Linen and Sateen Cotton.
But first, an overview of percale cotton: why it’s an extraordinary type of cotton and why we’re obsessed with it.
Here are the facts
Percale is a weaving method, not a specific type of cotton. The word “percale” refers to the specific type of weave used to produce the sheet, not the material it’s made from. It’s actually a signature tight weave, or in other words, it’s closely woven. As a result, the threads cross over and under each other one at a time, tightly (in a one-yarn-over and one-yarn-under technique). So while there are different types of cotton bedsheets, such as Egyptian, or 100% classic cotton, each of these types of cotton can be made with a percale weave. Our percale sheets are 100% long-staple cotton.
The weave of a fabric impacts how it looks and feels. Percale’s tight weave results in a cool, crisp texture. Don’t mistake its crispness for roughness; percale is crisp in terms of its durability and its clean, fresh feeling. Percale is characterized as matte, lightweight and breathable (making it perfect for any temp), and it boasts a “buttery” feel that’s smooth to the touch. In a word: delicious.
Stonewashing = the ultimate “worn-in” feel. When percale sheets are stonewashed -- as Tess. sheets are! -- they get softer and softer with every wash. So they get that lived-in vibe that only gets better with time, like your favorite pair of denim that feels like a second skin. And they are pre-shrunk, which ensures no extra shrinkage occurs. When it comes to size, what you see is what you get.
Finish is everything: Our natural garment dyeing technique (it’s an OEKO-TEX®-certified dyeing process) gives the percale a soft, frequently-washed look, while ensuring its rich hue. And rest assured, the technique adheres to the highest safety and eco-friendly standards.
